Brain Exercise Initiative (BEI) is a student-led volunteer organization that uses simple math, writing, and read-aloud exercises as an intervention to improve cognitive function in seniors. It aspires to combat memory loss in patients with dementia, provide seniors social companionship, and create an invaluable and all-too-rare avenue for intergenerational service, discussion, and collaboration. As a volunteer, you will be working with seniors from nearby retirement homes to lead weekly exercise sessions. A session will last approximately an hour, and volunteers will help seniors complete an exercise packet and socialize with them during this time. BEI at Redeemer is part of an international organization established at colleges and universities around the world, with more than 80 chapters and over 1,000 volunteers. You can check out BEI’s official website
here. To sign up to become a volunteer, you can fill out this
form. Please also note that as per the homes’ policies, every in-person volunteer will need to be fully vaccinated and abide by the provincial health directives.
