An article about Movember might seem unnecessary; look! facial hair everywhere! Other news: the sky is blue! It’s hard to miss the moustaches that are everywhere this month. However, many students do miss the point of Movember.
Movember is actually an initiative in support of men’s health. This year, Arel Ortiz, a fourth year health science major at Redeemer who is currently interning as a health services student assistant, got involved with Movember. She was looking for new initiatives for the Health Club, and found out about the Movember foundation.
Arel says the Movember foundation is “the only charity trying to tackle men’s health on a global scale; they do this by supporting funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health.” So this year, she put a notice in Timeout and a sign on Student Senate’s door to say that the health club will donate $1 to the Movember foundation for every name on the list. Arel hopes to get some good photos of everyone’s moustaches by the end of the month.
So far, only a few students have signed up. As far as Arel knows, no one has planned anything like this before, so that could be why few students have put their names down. There is no cost to sign up, and the sign-up sheet will be on the door until the end of Friday. So, if you’ve been bragging about your moustache, head to the student senate office and put down your name!
